Campaign Update
Tuesday, 19 July 2005
We have many people to thank this summer as our campaign gains momentum with each and every 95-degree day. Nothing stops our intrepid college interns (now 27 strong) who, along with hundreds of parade volunteers, have marched in parades from Albert Lea to Eveleth. All in all, we've covered 59 summer parades and festivals. Over the Fourth of July weekend, I had the pleasure of walking in seven parades on the Range--from Aurora to Gilbert to Eveleth, north to Tower, Ely, Nashwauk, and ending in Biwabik. Many of my relatives came out to meet me including my grandma's sister Angela and many cousins, aunts and uncles, including John Klobuchar, retired mailman of Ely, who has been known to call the Twin Cities radio stations from time to time to report just how cold it is in Ely. Just remember, it is always colder in Embarass.

Thanks also to all of you who have volunteered, shared your ideas and contributed. So many of you joined our effort by contributing on-line in June that we exceeded our fundraising goal and ended the second quarter with $650,000 raised. We have been very frugal with our money and now have $1.1 million in the bank, more than the anointed Republican candidate and three times as much as any of the primary candidates.

When the Kennedy campaign brought out U.S. Senator Bill Frist, Speaker of the House Dennis Hassert and White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card, we knew they'd be no match for our celebrities—the Gear Daddies band of Austin, Minnesota. Can Frist, et. al, sing the "I wanna Ride the Zamboni" song? Well, you know the answer.

This wouldn't have happened without your grassroots support. For those of you who contributed on-line during June, your bumper sticker will arrive soon. Thanks!

The highlight of July so far was taking our daughter, Abigail, with me for visits to Rochester, Mankato, Morris, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Alexandria. I kept calling it a "little mother-daughter summer vacation" to which she would always roll her eyes and say, "most normal people don't put stickers with their names on them on perfect strangers during their summer vacations, MOM." She especially enjoyed the Harry Potter party and the wand and potions that we took back from Moorhead.
