This past week, we visited our 87th Minnesota county--Wabasha. It was an amazing event in a park looking out over the Mississippi River, surrounded by trees of every fall color. But most importantly, Wabasha was my final stop in my eighteen-month long quest to visit all 87 counties in Minnesota. It was the perfect place to end my tour--in Wabasha, Minnesota's oldest city, where I was joined by Minnesota's youngest legislator, Andy Welti. Minnesota's oldest newspaper columnist was there too--my dad.
It has taken me 37,000 miles (mostly in the family Saturn) to visit each county in this great state and it is a journey I promise to complete every year that I serve in the Senate. As I said that day, I will be a Senator for all of Minnesota. You can see the pictures from our travels around the state in our photo gallery and see articles about our visits during the past 18 months in the "In the News" section of our website.
My favorite stage? Speaking on the feet of the two-story Smokey the Bear statue in International Falls. The prettiest place we visited? Walker, where we had a picnic with Cass County friends next to Leech Lake on a perfect August day.
I've learned that they love their kolacky in Montgomery just like my Range relatives love their potica. I've learned not to not to ask for a diet coke when visiting American Crystal Sugar in Moorhead. But most of all I've been inspired by the everyday heroes of this state.
I've been inspired by the enthusiasm of preschoolers in Austin, the fortitude of auto plant workers in St. Paul, the innovative spirit of southwestern Minnesota farmers focused on renewable energy, and the incredible strength of veterans in St. Cloud.
More than anything else, my visits to every county gave me the chance to meet with thousands of Minnesotans and listen to their concerns and hopes for our country. I can't wait to get to work to put the people of this Minnesota first in Washington and I can't wait to come back to visit every county next year.
We enter the final month of this journey with impressive momentum and thousands of dedicated volunteers. I love what October will bring because it is when people, more than money, will make the difference. I'm proud of the campaign we are running, and even more proud of the thousands of you who are helping. Your help is needed in these last four weeks to win this race. I need you to talk to your friends and neighbors at the sidelines of the high school football games to the lobbies of movies theaters to the lunch rooms at work and tell them about our campaign for change. I need your help to reach thousands of Minnesotans at the phone banks and door knocking drives. Please sign up to help volunteer online or email Lizzie Nelson, our Volunteer Coordinator at
