VOLUNTEER
Amy visits with seniors at the Minnesota State Fair. As County Attorney, Amy launched a Senior Initiative, assigning a special team of prosecutors to handle crimes committed against senior citizens and vulnerable adults.
Amy knows that law-enforcement efforts must be coordinated to fight and reduce crime. She initiated major law enforcement trainings throughout Hennepin County.
Amy was the leading advocate for the Minnesota law that now guarantees a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for new moms and their babies.
Amy has worked hard to make schools safe and to improve the lives of kids through her volunteer work with organizations such as Campfire, PACER, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
Amy is an active participant in community affairs. She knows that an engaged citizenry makes for a better Minnesota for all of us.

Effective Prosecutor

• Since Amy was elected, serious crime in Hennepin County has dropped significantly because of the work of her office and the efforts of police departments, businesses, and the people in the communities she represents.
• Amy's office has secured nearly 300 homicide convictions and taken a more aggressive approach to gun crimes, especially the prosecution of convicted felons who possess guns.
• Her office has pursued civil commitments against numerous predatory sex offenders about to be released from prison.
• As County Attorney, Amy established a Property Crimes Team dedicated to prosecuting auto thefts, burglaries, check forgery, credit card fraud and felony-level vandalism.
• The Office of the Legislative Auditor has highlighted her office's successful use of Minnesota's Career Offender Statute.
• Successful white-collar crime prosecutions include commerical airline pilots for tax evasion; members of an identity theft ring who stole personal information from hospital patients; and a Minnesota Court of Appeals judge who stole $400,000 from a mentally disabled woman's trust fund.
• Amy has argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court on matters of concern to prosecutors and the public.
• Amy started a Senior Initiative in the County Attorney's Office, assigning a special team of prosecutors to handle crimes committed against seniors and vulnerable adults.
• To keep kids safe and in the classroom and out of the courtroom, Amy has partnered with school districts to reduce violence and prevent truancy.
• As County Attorney, Amy worked with law enforcement agencies to protect the innocent by putting in place new eyewitness identification procedures for police departments.

Legislative Advocate

• As a private citizen before becoming Hennepin County Attorney, Amy was the leading advocate for state legislation that now assures 48-hour hospital stays for new moms and their babies.
• Amy has testified at the Minnesota Legislature, in both House and Senate committees, to support legislation providing stiffer penalties for meth manufacturers. She has also testified at the legislature to oppose amnesty for tax evaders.
• Amy drafted and advocated for legislation that now provides tougher penalties for large-scale identity thefts and gives judges more discretion to impose longer sentences for offenders who exploit other people's identities to commit crimes.
• Amy drafted and advocated for legislation that has enhanced the protection of vulnerable adults using transit services.
• Amy was a strong and persistent advocate for Minnesota's new felony DWI law, which makes it a felony crime for someone to get a fourth DWI within a 10-year period. Previously, repeat offenders never faced more than a misdemeanor level offense, no matter how many times they were convicted of drunk driving.
• Amy advocated for new state legislation that gives police officers access to mental health data in emergency situations. She also participated in the creation of a Mental Health Court to help treat the mental health issues of people in the criminal justice system.
• Amy supported legislation that provides for a coordinated response to identity theft and other property crimes through a statewide Financial Crimes Task Force, as well as legislation supporting the Gang Strike Force.
• Amy was a leading advocate for legislation giving prosecutors the opportunity to present a final rebuttal following a defense attorney's closing argument. Before the passage of that law, Minnesota was the only state in the nation where prosecutors did not have the last word, even though they carry the burden of proof at trial.
• Amy appeared with President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno at the White House to advocate for federal hate crimes legislation.

Policy Innovator

• Amy has worked hard to make schools safe and to improve the lives of kids through her volunteer work with organizations such as Campfire, PACER, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. Under Amy's leadership, the Hennepin County Attorney's Office has received national awards for establishing a Neighborhood Court Watch, restoring polluted and tax-forfeited land, creating a law enforcement training program, launching a Senior Initiative as well as a Safe Schools Initiative, and implementing community prosecution and increased coordination to combat domestic violence.
• The Hennepin County Attorney's Office was named one of nine community prosecution leadership sites in the country by the U.S. Department of Justice.
